A California salary can look generous on paper and still feel surprisingly tight on payday. That is because a California paycheck carries more layers of tax than most other states: federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, California state income tax and the state’s disability insurance charge all come out before the money reaches you. Use the california salary calculator at the top of this page to turn any California salary into hourly, weekly, biweekly and monthly take-home pay, then read on to understand each deduction for 2026.

California Salary Calculator

Estimates only, based on 2026 federal and California rates. Your actual withholding may differ.

How California Paychecks Are Taxed

The federal part works the same in California as everywhere else. Your salary is first reduced by the federal standard deduction, which for 2026 is $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly and $24,150 for heads of household, under the IRS tax inflation adjustments for tax year 2026. The remaining taxable income is taxed in slices from 10% up to 37%, so your effective rate is well below your top bracket.

On top of that, FICA takes 6.2% for Social Security on wages up to $184,500 and 1.45% for Medicare on all wages, with an extra 0.9% Medicare tax on wages above $200,000 for single and head of household filers or $250,000 for married couples filing jointly.

California then adds its own income tax, with its own standard deduction and its own set of brackets, plus SDI at 1.3% of gross wages. That extra layer is the main reason take-home pay in California is lower than in a no-tax state on the same salary. If you are comparing a move, it helps to run the same salary through our California take-home pay calculator as well and compare the two results side by side.

As with any estimator, the numbers here are a close guide rather than an exact promise. Your real withholding depends on your W-4 and California DE 4 choices, your pay frequency and any pre-tax benefits, so small differences from your actual pay stub are normal.

California State Tax and SDI Explained

California state income tax and SDI deductions on a paycheck

California’s income tax uses nine brackets, published in the Franchise Tax Board 2026 tax rate schedules. The state standard deduction for 2026 is $5,900 for single filers and $11,800 for married couples filing jointly and heads of household. Taxable income above the deduction is then taxed in slices, starting at just 1%.

$11,456 – $27,1572%
$27,157 – $42,8614%

$460,927 – $768,21311.3%
Over $768,21312.3%

Very high earners pay one more charge: the Mental Health Services Tax adds an extra 1% on California taxable income above $1,000,000, whatever your filing status. The california salary calculator at the top of this page includes that extra tax automatically when a salary is large enough to trigger it.

Alongside income tax, California charges SDI, the State Disability Insurance contribution that funds disability and paid family leave benefits. For 2026 the rate is 1.3% of gross wages with no wage cap, and it is paid by the employee, as set out in the Employment Development Department payroll tax guidance. On a $90,000 salary that is $1,170 a year, so it is too large to ignore in a budget.

One thing to keep in mind: this estimate uses the California standard deduction and brackets and does not include personal exemption credits, so it is an estimate. Those credits would reduce the state bill slightly on a real return, which means the california salary calculator can be a little cautious on the state tax line.

Worked Example: $90,000 Salary in California

Take a single filer earning $90,000 in California in 2026. Federal taxable income is $90,000 minus the $16,100 standard deduction, which is $73,900, and the federal tax on that is $10,970.00. FICA is a flat 7.65% at this level, which comes to $6,885.00.

For the state, taxable income is $90,000 minus the $5,900 California standard deduction, giving $84,100. Working through the brackets slice by slice gives a state tax bill of $4,138.86, and SDI at 1.3% of gross pay adds $1,170.00.

ItemAmount
Annual salary$90,000.00
Federal income tax$10,970.00
Social Security and Medicare (FICA)$6,885.00
California state income tax$4,138.86
California SDI (1.3%)$1,170.00
Annual take-home pay$66,836.14

In total, $23,163.86 comes out in taxes and SDI, leaving take-home pay of $66,836.14, roughly 74% of the gross salary. The same salary in a state with no income tax would keep noticeably more, which is why comparing offers between states needs after-tax figures. Our Texas paycheck calculator makes that contrast clear, and the 2026 income tax calculator helps if you have income beyond a single salary.

Salary Breakdown: Weekly, Biweekly and Monthly

A California salary broken down into weekly, biweekly and monthly pay

Most California employers pay biweekly or semi-monthly, but budgets are usually planned monthly, so converting between periods is a daily need. The rules are simple: divide the annual figure by 2,080 for an hourly rate, by 52 for weekly pay, by 26 for biweekly pay and by 12 for monthly pay. The same divisions apply to take-home pay once the annual after-tax figure is known.

Pay periodGross pay on $90,000Take-home pay
Per hour$43.27$32.13
Per week$1,730.77$1,285.31
Biweekly$3,461.54$2,570.62
Per month$7,500.00$5,569.68
Per year$90,000.00$66,836.14

Semi-monthly pay is common in California office jobs. That means 24 checks a year, each slightly larger than a biweekly check on the same salary, but the annual take-home is the same. Biweekly workers get two months with a third paycheck each year, which many people treat as a built-in savings moment.

When you plan a monthly budget from a biweekly salary, the safe method is to budget from two checks a month and treat the two extra checks as one-off income. That way a five-week month never catches you short, and the extra checks can go towards annual costs such as insurance or holidays.

How to Convert a California Salary to an Hourly Rate

Hourly conversion is the fastest way to compare a salaried California offer with hourly or contract work. Using the standard full-time year of 2,080 hours, $90,000 a year is $43.27 an hour before tax and about $32.13 an hour after tax for a single filer. A $70,000 salary is $33.65 an hour gross, and $120,000 is $57.69 an hour gross.

Going the other way, multiply an hourly wage by 2,080 to get the yearly figure. A $35 hourly wage equals roughly $72,800 a year before deductions. Contract rates need extra care, because a contractor may have to cover costs an employee does not, and California taxes still apply in full either way.

Hours matter too. A salary based on a 35-hour week has fewer annual hours, so the true hourly value is higher than the 2,080-hour shortcut suggests. Always compare roles using the same expected hours, and use the california salary calculator at the top of this page when you want the after-tax hourly figure rather than the gross one.

Tips to Check Your California Pay Stub

California pay stubs are detailed by law, which makes them easier to audit than most. Check that the gross pay, hours and rate match your agreement, then scan the deduction lines one by one. You should expect to see federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, California income tax and a line for CA SDI or CASDI.

The year-to-date column is your friend. Multiply a normal period’s SDI by the number of periods so far and compare it with the year-to-date figure; at 1.3% of gross wages with no cap, it should track your gross pay closely all year. If the SDI line stops partway through the year, ask payroll why, because there is no longer a wage limit at which it should stop.

Also check that your state withholding roughly follows your DE 4 choices. Claiming extra allowances on the DE 4 lowers state withholding but does not change the tax you finally owe, so a surprisingly small state deduction each period can turn into a bill at filing time. Finally, remember that health premiums and retirement contributions reduce each check as well; the california salary calculator on this page covers taxes and SDI, so add your own benefit amounts for a complete picture.

FAQs

How much tax is taken from a $90,000 salary in California?

For a single filer in 2026, the deductions are $10,970.00 in federal income tax, $6,885.00 in FICA, $4,138.86 in California state income tax and $1,170.00 in SDI. That leaves take-home pay of $66,836.14 for the year.

What is California SDI and why is it on my paycheck?

SDI is State Disability Insurance, which funds short-term disability and paid family leave benefits in California. In 2026 employees pay 1.3% of gross wages, with no yearly wage cap, and it appears on pay stubs as SDI, CASDI or a similar label.

What is $90,000 a year per hour in California?

Dividing $90,000 by 2,080 working hours gives $43.27 an hour before tax. After federal tax, FICA, state tax and SDI, a single filer’s take-home works out to about $32.13 an hour.

Does California tax high earners extra?

Yes. Above the normal brackets, the Mental Health Services Tax adds 1% on California taxable income over $1,000,000. Combined with the top bracket rate of 12.3%, the highest slice of a very large California income is taxed at 13.3% by the state.

Why is my California take-home lower than a friend’s in Texas on the same salary?

California charges state income tax and SDI, while Texas charges neither. On a $90,000 salary those two California charges alone come to more than $5,300 a year for a single filer, before any difference in federal tax.

Are the calculator results exact?

No, they are careful estimates based on 2026 standard deductions, brackets and rates. The California figure does not include personal exemption credits, and real withholding also depends on your W-4, DE 4, pay schedule and pre-tax benefits, so your actual checks may differ slightly.
